He grew up in Denver and received his schooling at East High School, Stanford University and the University of Colorado School of Law. He abandoned The Law in order to pursue writing. And he has a reluctant side career as a semi-professional patient: two lung transplants in the last 14 years, the first due to Cystic Fibrosis.
