He has edited Kansas History: A Journal of the Central Plains for 25 years and is the author or editor of four books and numerous articles, encyclopedia entries, and book reviews. A resident of Lawrence for more than 30 years, Dean has been actively involved in the preservation community, serving on the city's Historic Resources Commission and the board of the Lawrence Preservation Alliance.
