Born in Brookline, Massachusetts in 1893, he became interested in golf at an early age and started caddying at The Country Club at the age of 11. He taught himself to play and soon caught the eye of many country club members and caddie master Dan MacNamara. After winning his first significant title at age 20, the Massachusetts Amateur, he became the first amateur to win the U.S. Open in 1913, a success which is credited for bringing golf into the American sporting mainstream. He won his second U.S. Amateur in 1931, played on the first eight Walker Cup Teams, and was Captain of the next four for a team record of 11-1. In 1951 he became the first non-Briton elected Captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, and in 1955 the first-ever winner of the Bob Jones Award, the highest honor given by the USGA. The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund was established in his honor in 1949, and The Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf is presented annually at its banquet, with past winners including Arnold Palmer (1997), Peter Jacobsen (2006), Jack Nicklaus (2007), and Annika Sörenstam (2010). Ouimet died in Newton, Massachusetts in 1967, aged 74. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.
BERNARD RICHARD MEIRION DARWIN CBE JP (1876-1961), a grandson of Charles Darwin, was a golf writer and high-standard amateur golfer. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2005. Educated at Eton College, he graduated in law from Trinity College, Cambridge, but became a journalist instead, covering golf for The Times from 1907-1953 and for Country Life from 1907-1961, the first writer ever to cover golf on a daily basis. He was Captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in 1934, and President of the Golf Club Managers’ Association from 1933-1934 and 1955-1958.lihat lebih sedikit
