He is a physical chemist who completed his studies at Ruhr-University Bochum in 1994, where he also earned his doctorate. Subsequently, he led a research group focused on online NMR spectroscopy at the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics and Thermal Process Engineering at the University of Stuttgart. He also worked as a scientific staff member and group leader in Central Service Analytics at Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, until he was appointed as the Head of the "Process Analytics" department at BAM in 2008.
