Gary attended the Danville, Illinois, public schools and later became a teacher, coach, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent of schools in the area. He holds a Bachelor's degree and PH.D. from Illinois State University, and a Master's Degree from Eastern Illinois University. He is currently an adjunct professor at the University of South Florida.
