She was born in Lampton, Mississippi, Marion County. She was three years old when her family moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in Forrest County. Catherine attended Eureka Elementary & High School to the 10th grade. The principal was N. R. Burger in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The 11th and 12th grades were completed at Saints Industrial School in Lexington, Mississippi. She furthered her education one year at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
