She grew up in the 1950s in the rural, Eastern Cape, making up bedtime stories for her young brothers in which Father Christmas slipped down the chimney of a mud hut. At boarding school friends waited for chapters about a Little Women type heroine. But it was only when her sons had left home that she began writing again. Having had only brothers and sons, choosing a man as her main character made sense. She is a retired high school teacher and lives in Cape Town. This is her first novel.
