I have practised as a physician/scientist as a member of staff of the Department of Medicine of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, for forty-five years and am now emeritus professor of medicine and honorary research professor of the University of the Witwatersrand and honorary research professor of medicine in the Department of Medicine in the University of Cape Town (for past four years).
My clinical specialty is in the field of disease of the liver, and the main thrust of my research is the very high incidence of liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) in the black population of sub-Saharan Africa. During my career, I have seen and cared for countless patients with this devastating form of cancer and have been involved in ascertaining its causes and how it can be treated or prevented. During my career, I have been the author of 451 scientific papers and 69 chapters in medical books, and the great majority of these have been concerned with hepatocellular carcinoma.
