After university and national service, he trained for the Anglican ministry and was ordained in 1957 by Michael Ramsey—the Archbishop of York at that time. He served ten years in that diocese—five of them as vicar of a moorland parish—before entering hospital chaplaincy, ending his career as chaplain of Guy's Hospital.
