He left the Christian church during his military service and came out as a gay man in 2003. He is currently the spokesperson for OUT Armed Forces, a nonprofit asking LGBT active-duty and veterans to come out to help military personnel successfully and safely serve openly in the US Armed Forces. He holds a Master’s degree in Humanities (Literature/Philosophy) and a Bachelor's in English Literature from the University of Colorado at Denver.
