He was born and raised on a farm in Iowa and graduated from Iowa State University in 1962. Following retirement he became active in promoting equal rights as it relates to Native Americans, Indian reservations and federal Indian policy. He currently holds the position of chairman of both the national organization, Citizens Equal Rights Foundation and the local organization Mille Lacs Equal Rights Foundation.
