Educated at Eton College and New College, Oxford, he joined the Royal Artillery during World War II. On his return to Oxford in 1945, he accepted the post of Reader in Assyriology, which he held until his retirement in 1978. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1959 and a Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1963. In 1965, the University conferred on him the title of Professor.
