Born in Merrimac, Massachusetts, he grew up in nearby Lowell and began his career in a textile mill and writing for a newspaper for two cents per column inch. He went to work for the American Can Company in Jersey City, becoming a foreman, conducting time-and-motion studies and overseeing quality control.
He then served three years in the Army during WWII, fighting in the Pacific and leaving the service with the rank of captain.
After the war he studied management at Rutgers University where he received his B.S. degree, and at New York University where he earned his M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees. It was at NYU that he first encountered “management by objectives” and soon began expanding on the idea and promoting it.
He advanced through the positions of inspector, assistant foreman, foreman, and supervisor with the American Can Company. Later he joined General Mills, Inc. as the Assistant Director of Personnel. He has also consulted extensively on executive development with many other organizations.
Dr. Odiorne was the author of scores of published articles and co-author of several books. He is a member of the American Society for Training Directors, the American Economic Association, and the American Management Association.lihat lebih sedikit
