She was recognized in 1946 with the Medal of Freedom by President Truman for her actions.
She posed as a Lithuanian nurse in the Philippines and led an underground movement to smuggle medication, food, and other supplies to American POWs. She was imprisoned and tortured, but after being released, resumed her activities. She is credited with helping countless soldiers, saving many lives.
She spent much of her childhood in Canada. Her first husband, John Rowley, died a year after their marriage. They had a son, Charles. She later married John “Jack” Utinsky. Her second husband survived the Bataan Death March, but died of starvation while imprisoned by the Japanese.
She wrote a book about her experiences titled “Miss U,” which was her code name. Her story was also included in the movie “The Great Raid.”
