She grew up in a suburb snubbed by snobs in Perth, Western Australia, where stories hid behind flywire doors and bodies sometimes turned up in gum-scented scrub. Cat tends to write about injustices or pure bad luck but likes to leave her readers with a sense of hope. She enjoys the contradictions within people, the stereotypical derailed—or enriched—by the atypical, and her characters are inspired by her multilayered, predictably unpredictable and always well-loved family members.
