He was born in Brooklyn, raised in San Francisco, which he still calls his home town, and attended the University of Alabama. He joined the army as a private and rose to the rank of second lieutenant during the Second World War. After his discharge he worked for UNESCO in Paris, and then for Economic Cooperation Administration (ECA), a United States government agency set up in 1948, administering the Marshall Plan.
In 1952, Davis established himself in Rome, serving as the Rome Bureau Chief for the Mutual Broadcasting System, and began writing for magazines, including the Saturday Evening Post, Holiday, Business Week, and newspapers, including The New York Times and Herald Tribune, the Christian Science Monitor, the San Francisco Chronicle. He also wrote articles for many foreign publications, including Republique Moderne and Le Monde Français in France, Fortnightly in England, Mondo Europeo for Italy, and the Toronto Star Weekly in Canada.
His magazine article and books have been translated into many languages, including his worldwide bestseller, All Rome Trembled, which was first published in 1957.lihat lebih sedikit
