He was born the son of Sir John Beverley Robinson, 1st Baronet, and Emma Walker, and married Margaret Frances Alison, daughter of General Sir Archibald Alison, 2nd Baronet, and Jane Black, in 1884. He was educated in Canada at the Upper Canada College in Toronto, Ontario and Trinity College, Toronto University. He subsequently fought in the Indian Mutiny in 1858 and in the Ashanti War between 1873-1874, where he was mentioned in despatches.
Robinson fought in the First Boer War in 1879, where he was mentioned in despatches, and gained the rank of in the Rifle Brigade. He was Assistant Adjutant-General of the Aldershot from 1884-1889 and was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1887. He served as Assistant Military Secretary at the Army Headquarters from 1889-1892 and as commander of the troops in Mauritius from 1892-1895.
He was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1923.
