Irvin Magin is a geography graduate of Washington State College (now University) in 1958.
He was born in Baltimore, raised in central Maryland and now since retirement has lived near the town of New Market, Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley.
A former federal employee, he worked with the Central Intelligence Agency for 30 years as a specialist in map research and analysis.
His personal interests center on historical geography and, particularly, toponymy. As a result of these interests he was inspired to create a work of significance which would combine a part of the past with a part of the present – to enlighten, to add a bit of color and most important, to instill in the reader the inclination to search further.
