He was a Rotary Club (1973-1974) exchange student in Santa Cruz, Bolivia and studied (1977-1978) at the Julius Maximilians Universitaet in Wuerzburg, Germany. He holds an M.A in German Language and Literature as well as an M.S. in Education from the University of New York at Albany, New York. He taught English as part of a British-German educational exchange (1982-1983) at the Marie Curie Oberschule in West Berlin, Germany.
