John Francis Faupel (1906-1985) was born in Wimbledon, on the outskirts of London, England, to William (Wilhelm) Faupel and Rosa Faupel. He was the eldest in a family of eleven children. He was the eldest in a family of eleven children. Father Faupel received his schooling at the King’s College in Wimbledon and graduated from Christ College in Cambridge in 1936. He was ordained in July 1932 and joined the St. Joseph’s Missionary Society of Mill Hill in North London. In 1937 Father Faupel was sent to Uganda, where he was engaged in educational work, and became chaplain of the staff at Kampala Technical Institute.
