He graduated from Princeton University in New Jersey, and served in both World War I and II. His assignments included chief of the Occupational History Branch of the Army’s Office of Chief Historian serving in Germany. He retired from the Army in 1951. He published a number of books on military history, including Paul Revere’s Horse (1949), The Army Officer’s Manual (1942) and They Were Not Afraid to Die, 1775-1781 (1939).
