He was taught to worship God, have reverence for the word of the Lord, love his fellow man, and "study all good books." As a teenager he was the worship leader for his youth group. At a midweek worship service he was admonished to prepare for ministry to people while in service to God. He served as associate chaplain in college for two years. As a patient in a rehab facility after being struck by a car as a pedestrian, he befriended the chaplain and later joined the pastoral care team. He and his wife served as guest chaplains for sixteen years. They led non-denominational worship services for patients, staff, and visitors one Sunday every other month.
