He turned 18 while in basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He attended the Washington Technical Institute long before it became the University of District of Columbia (UDC) by joining three of D.C.'s undergraduate Colleges.
Marrying his Junior High School sweetheart, they had two children. He eventually finished college with an undergraduate degree in Psychology at Coppin State University.
