He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the School of Architecture at the University of New Mexico, and specializes in passive solar residential design and energy efficiency. He taught passive solar workshops throughout New Mexico and the Southwest in the 1980s and served for many years on the board of the New Mexico Solar Energy Association. He is a past president of the Downtown Neighborhoods Association.
