At Furman, he was a two-time All-Conference selection at tight end; he was also named to the Southern Conference's All Academic teams in 1977 and 1978. Simmons graduated cum laude with a B.A in English and remained at Furman as a graduate assistant coach on Dick Sheridan's staff.
After serving for six years in campus ministry at the University of Tennessee, in 1987, Simmons rejoined Sheridan's staff at N. C. State where he served as a graduate assistant coach (1987-1988) and then as Recruiting Coordinator (1989-1992.) When Sheridan resigned for health reasons in 1993, he was named an assistant coach on new head coach Mike's O'Cain's staff 1993-1999.
Over the past twenty years Simmons has worked in sales and customer service. He currently lives in Lake Royale, North Carolina where he is pursuing a final career as a writer and public speaker. "Man in the Gap" is his first book.
