Growing up in Teesside, he learned a love of story-telling from a grandfather who told him rollicking tales of adventurers, navigators and explorers from the days of history. Later, when a work colleague described one of his scientific offerings as ‘fiction’, he recalled his story-telling roots and began writing his own short stories.
