He was an Eagle Scout and one of six from the USA who attended the 1966 Boy Scout World Jamboree in Scotland. As a teenager he built and raced fast cars. He learned to play string bass in school and played in the local symphony. He also played bass guitar and recorded with a popular Midwest rock band. He owned and operated several small businesses including an auto parts store and machine shop.
