Wiegand claims to know children and how they think. “I was once a child, myself”, proclaims D.M., “. . . and I have seen many thousands more prowling the neighborhoods, walking in malls while texting each other, and selling cookies and raffle tickets at my front door; so I know what I’m talking about!” A 15-minute conversation with the author invariably leaves one with the impression that he has never fully surrendered the “binky” of his own childhood, which actually serves to only further cement his professed “street cred.” A former English major, teacher, and lawyer, D.M. knows how to weave a compelling tale, whether that be in a courtroom, a legal brief, or a children’s book. And yes, the morals and life lessons typically associated with children’s books are there for the learning; however, they are not overt, in-your-face, and preachy, but rather woven into the storyline and absorbed in a fun, subliminal fashion.
