He earned both BS and MA degrees from Bowling Green state University. His degrees are in geology, but he later switched to archaeology. He also completed two years of doctoral work at the University of Arizona. He specialized in the flora, the fauna, and the appearance of Early Man at the end of the Ice Age. He has published hundreds of popular articles about American Indians and technical articles on midwestern archaeology.
