He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Kentucky in 1989 before going on to graduate with a Master of Theology degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky in 1993. He also served as a Southern Baptist minister in Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia and Alabama. Besides being a triple war combat veteran, he is also a cancer survivor.
