He graduated from high school in 1969 and entered the navy the following year, serving as a sailor and attending several naval schools. He became a jet mechanic and a helicopter plane captain and crew chief. After exiting the navy, Dykes gained recognition for outstanding work in several jobs; while working at Boeing Helicopters, he was nominated as Employee of the Month. Dykes went on to work as a construction superintendent until retiring from the Levy Construction Company in Audubon, New Jersey. He and his wife, Linda, have two daughters and one son.
