He is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University and its school of medicine. He played football for CWRU and was awarded the National Football Foundation’s Scholar Athlete Award in 1961. After internship at the University of Vermont, he served as a physician for the Peace Corps in Ecuador from 1967 to 1969. He was trained in diagnostic imaging at Yale New Haven Hospital and was board certified in both diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine. He practiced in Fort Lauderdale as head of diagnostic radiology at the North Beach Medical Center and, subsequently, the Cleveland Clinic Hospital. He studied philosophy at Florida Atlantic University. In 1988, he founded the Institute for Applied Philosophy, which is dedicated to fostering philosophy outside of the university setting. In 1992, he moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina, where he practiced for the next twenty-two years and continued public programs in philosophy in conjunction with the philosophy department of the University of North Carolina. He recently retired from practice after forty-two years. He is married and has four children and six grandchildren. He claims, “I have studied human beings my entire life.
