At the age of 7 he was introduced to the works of Edgar Allan Poe. There was an immediate interest in the author. Possibly, the name; but mostly it was the pain the author expressed. A young then Edgar Burgos hung on every stanza of Poe. “It felt as though Poe knew what I was going through at the time. His work was an escape for me.” At the age of 11, he began to write poems and short stories, “Writing soothed me. Unlike reading a story where I was at the mercy of the author, I was the painter; and this time I could paint my picture into the minds of the reader.” Through out junior high school and high school he read plays, poems, short stories by various authors like Langston Hughes, William Shakespeare, Helen Keller, and being influenced by musicians like Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, and Pearl Jam. Because of his conversion to Islam when he was 17, he changed his name to Umar Abdul-Mutakabbir, it seems as though Umar was influenced by the best author God.lihat lebih sedikit
