Perhaps because of his early education at the hands of Northern immigrants, he is commonly mistaken for a Yankee, and occasionally for some other species of foreigner. This has led to many ugly incidents between Stephens and more authentic Southerners. Nevertheless, he continues to write about the South, which he describes as “a land of heroic weirdness.” Stephens lives in Florida, where he can blend in among other quasi-Southerners.
