He obtained a BA degree from Drake University, a JD degree from the University of Iowa, and an MBA degree from the University of South Dakota. He practiced corporate law in Sioux City, Iowa, for thirty-two years. He retired as senior vice president and general counsel. He and Barbara, his wife of sixty-three years, moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas, where he took writing classes at the University of Arkansas and Northwest Arkansas Community College.
