He was educated at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis Indiana. He was first introduced to poetry by his Grandmother, Goldie Webb, who read poetry to him when he was preschool. He wrote his first poem in 1964:
My Pets
I have had many pets
Dogs, cats, frogs
And even little poly-wogs
With them all
I’ve had a ball
I love all my pets
