He served his curacy at St. George’s Hyde during the time of Dr. Harold Shipman, who was believed to be responsible for the murder of over two hundred people from his practices in Hyde and Todmorden. He supported parishioners through an extremely distressing and bewildering time as the events unfolded, from Shipman’s arrest to his subsequent conviction for murdering fifteen of his patients. He gave evidence during the trial and following the sentencing gave numerous media interviews and hosted the memorial service for the victim’s families.
In 2008, he pioneered the Archbishop of York Award, encouraging young people to live out their Christian faith. This has now been introduced in a number of secondary schools throughout the North of England as a Young Leaders Award. Prior to entering the ministry, he was a senior scientific officer working at the Daresbury Research Facility in Cheshire, following a doctorate in biophysics from Bristol University.
