He has taught English at overseas American and international schools in Taipei, Singapore, Isfahan, and Luxembourg. He has also served as a Chinese Mandarin translator with the U.S. Army, as a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal, and as a curriculum writer in Saudi Arabia. In his youth, he traveled widely through South Asia, backpack style. His chief interest is Eastern religions.
