She attended Fredonia State College where she studied music and was 1st chair violinist for the Genesee Symphony, known for her perfect pitch. After earning a business degree from Penn Hall College in 1947, she worked as a bookkeeper for her father's automobile dealership. One day, a charming, handsome highway construction contractor came in looking for new trucks. Six months later, Tom Forrestel and Jo were married, and ten daughters later, they made the decision of a lifetime. They would take to the high seas. Jo has a Captain's License for ships up to 100 tons and is a certified Morse code and Ham radio operator. She was also asked to be on Columbia's Olympic skeet shooting team and was the first woman invited to be a member of the Coral Reef Yacht Club.
