After graduating from college, Kathleen married and had her first child, Shelly, who became brain damaged at thirteen months old. At the age of six, Shelly was placed in a permanent facility. Her sudden and lifelong disability made Kathleen realize how much we take for granted. Kathleen did not return to teaching until her second daughter,Katie, was nine years old.
