He holds a PhD in Military History from Duke University and is the author of Buff Facings and Gilt Buttons: Staff and Headquarters Operations in the Army of Northern Virginia, 1861-1865 as well as award winning articles on the theory of war and strategy. He is a Professor of Military History and Strategy at the U.S. Army War College where he held the General Dweight D.
