From 1957-1961 he served honorably in the US Air Force then successfully completed 20 years of public-school teaching with an MS of Education from Southern Illinois University. Later he completed 20 years as a Minister of the Gospel in the United Methodist Church in the Illinois Great Rivers Conference as an Elder with an MDIV from Christian Theological Seminary.
